Talk Title: Graphene for next generation nanomechanical sensors
Abstract: In this presentation recent progress on the route from MEMS toward 2D NEMS sensors was discussed [1,2]. After introducing fabrication and characterization methods for studying the static and dynamic motion of suspended ultrathin membranes, several concepts for sensing gas pressure using atomically thin membranes are demonstrated, including static, resonant and Pirani pressure sensing. Challenges to meet requirements on yield, sensitivity and lifetime are discussed and advances in optical and electronic calibration and readout methods using commercial low-cost electronics are discussed, aiming towards commercially viable graphene pressure sensor products as part of the Graphene Flagship sensors work package. Gas sensing concepts for analyzing gas composition based on permeation of gases through graphene nanopores were discussed and the feasibility of graphene gas pumps was shown.

Talk Title: Tactile Intelligence in Robotics and Cognitive Vehicles
Abstract: The sense of touch is a crucial capability for us to cope with physical interaction related challenges in everyday life. It enables grasping, manipulation, learning, and decision-making based on the information we get from the hundreds of mechanoreceptors distributed over our skin. This sense of touch is a capability, which robotic systems as well as smart vehicles of the future need to provide in order to be able to safely interact with humans. Tactile sensing is also essential to perform a variety of other tasks including industrial applications, consumer services, and other highly dynamic environments such as assistance and care for elderly, housekeeping, etc. For many such applications, tactile sensation, interactive perception, and learning play a crucial role. Soft, compliant, and highly integrated systems, often also suitable for large areas (sensor skins), are becoming increasingly relevant and are considered the future of robotic and vehicle interaction. These systems provide the necessary prerequisites for ubiquitous robotics and the integration of tactile sensors into existing robotic systems. This enables safe interaction and co-existence between humans and robots including novel assistive robotic devices.

Talk Title: Fast-Tracking 5G User Equipment System through Simulation Using Ansys
Abstract: Overcome the conventional, tedious and inaccurate design process that is dependent on experience-driven knowledge to a greater extent using a better design tool with better post-processing output quantities to Quantify the performance before building the physical samples. In the next generation 5G applications, the structure constituents and unit cost requirements are steering the reduction of post-manufacturing tuning and QoS-optimization, testing the power budget, Interference, Noise and EMC Compliance using physical prototypes would be much more expensive and time-consuming. Simulation helps to stay on budget and on a tight design schedule. These new challenges uncover the peril of conventional design methods: Simulation outputs of erroneous design will produce notable production peril, thus increasing the R&D cost and product growth timeline.
ANSYS Solution helps to accelerate the simulation accuracy and minimize the erroneous design decreasing R & D cost, and reduction in the production timeline.

He showed examples of how these have been implemented and encouraged the YP to translate their research work into products or useful solutions.

Talk Title: Digital health and AI: Learnings from three deep-tech start-ups
Abstract: The digital health and diagnostics space is undergoing a radical transformation especially post COVID. The conventional in-person, doctor consultations are rapidly being assisted/substituted by remote tele/video consultations and Direct to consumer care. In this context, point-of-care diagnostic solutions integrated with AI will transform the healthcare industry and will help in providing affordable health care to all. In this talk, he first briefly discussed the general trends in digital health and AI and where future opportunities lie in terms of innovations. He discussed his research efforts for the past 5+ years in the digital health space towards realizing devices for non-invasive BP, fatigue and multi-parameter monitoring. Subsequently, he shared his technical and entrepreneurial journey and learnings as a part of three deep tech biomedical start-ups as CEO, CTO and chief mentor role.

Talk Title: Bioinspired Design for Next-Generation Composites
Abstract: Plants are sessile organisms lacking physical motion and neurological control. Hence a stronger correlation between their structure and mechanical demands is anticipated. Specifically, the thick-walled water conductive xylem lacks the living parenchyma. However, it addresses varying functional needs from efficient thermal and fluid conduction to structural support through rapid structural and compositional modifications independent of the biological process of cell division. The above formed the primary hypothesis for a new research direction of my lab on plant biomechanics where we investigated microstructural and composition changes in plant stem during rapid growth using a combination of material characterization techniques. In this talk, I will provide some outcomes of Plant Biomechanics research and discuss its implications in the design of next-generation composites. I will also give an overview of my lab’s key research directions, including discussing bioinspired design for 2D Materials like MXenes of relevance for sensor design.

A young professionals development programme was hosted as a series of daily events for four consecutive days. The aim of this series is to prepare young professionals in their early career development, both in research skills and networking. This training programme is aimed at young professionals in sensing technology, from academia to industry. The goal is to prepare young researchers to develop, enhance and diversify skill sets needed for their career.
Four topics that are essential in the early-career stage of individual researchers were selected for young professionals and researchers. These include skills for writing a proposal, journal article writing skills, how to effectively review articles, and innovation and entrepreneurship for researchers. On each topic, there was a talk from invited experts, followed by an interactive discussion session. This provides a great opportunity for attendees to interact with speakers and colleagues, also to learn something new and boost their professional career.
Two Young Professionals events were organized on the first day of the IEEE FLEPS 2021, 21-23st June 2021. For the first event, two invited industry experts, Prof. Deepak Gupta (from National Center for Flexible Electronics, IIT Kanpur) and Dr. Neil Chilton (Technical Director of Printed Electronics Limited (PEL)) were gave talks about the current technology trends of flexible and printable electronics in the market, and the focus and products of their company. It was a good opportunity for young researchers doing research in the sector or looking for jobs. At the end of the meeting, there was a Q&A with attendees and speakers.
The second event was a mentors & mentees interaction session. Attendees were divided into three virtual rooms based on their interest and 3 mentors from academia were giving career advice to young researchers. It was an excellent opportunity for mentees to ask their questions directly to the mentors and had a one-to-one interaction with mentors.
In all, both sessions were appreciated by the attendees, and we plan to continue these types of YP events in future FLEPS conferences.

Ms. Bhatia heads the i-TTO, a regional tech transfer office set up at FITT with support from National Biopharma Mission, a joint project of Government of India and World Bank, with the mandate to cater to academia, startups and incubation centres. Her work entails innovation management, technology transfer, marketing, strategic partnership, industry engagement and policy development. Ms. Bhatia serves on the CLP Exam Development and Maintenance committee.
She has over 15 years of professional experience in intellectual property, licensing, collaborations, and policy framing, and is a recipient of Global Women Leader Award 2021 and WIPF Powerful Women In IP 2021.

Ravi and his team have developed four platform technologies for infectious disease diagnosis. He is keen to develop technologies to identify pathogens and drug susceptibility with a faster turnaround time in low resource settings.
