Emerging Possibilities in Smart Grid?

Industrial revolutions had been consistently giving impetus to the growth of our civilization. First revolution was reported in 1754 when the steam engine was invented and then electricity became the next catalyst in 1870. And now, something phenomenal is being felt in this series. The cyber physical system described as Industry 4.0 is being received with excitement for a new phase of exponential growth. The Internet of Things (IoT) is enabling creation of huge data from billions of sensors. Artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms running on ultrafast multicore processors enable real time analytics for the cyber systems to keep abreast with the physical world.

Amid all this, the requirement of clean and green energy for our planet’s sustainability continues to be the key concern. Smart grid, enabled by Industry 4.0, opens up unprecedented opportunities and possibilities to address the said concern. The upcoming scenario replete with electric vehicles, micro generators, solar and wind parks enables interesting business options for all the stakeholders of the smart grid; some such interesting stories which might seem like science fiction are discussed here.

Dr. Mishra has over thirty three years of industrial experiences including Inertial Navigation and Attack Systems (Jaguar), HAL and Advanced Metering Infra (AMI) and Smart Grid Technologies at Landis+Gyr Global Development Centre and Genus Power Infra Ltd.

Dr. Mishra is a PhD Constrained Bandwidth Advanced Metering Infrastructure, Dept of Computer Science and Engg, MNIT, Jaipur and holds MTech in Aircraft Production Engg., IIT Madras and BE Honours in Electronics and Communication, MBM Engg College, Jodhpur.
